Beadschool Tutorial: Tips and Tricks - The Bead & Button Show
Beadschool site: www.beadschool.co.uk. The Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is an absolutely fabulous event for anyone interested in jewellery-making, and in particular beadwork, to visit. It's superbly organised by the Kalmbach people who also publish the magazine of the same name. For years the Bead & Button Show has been a topic of conversation that always crops up at every beadwork meeting I've attended, or table where I've sat with beadworkers; it usually goes something like, "Has anyone been to the Bead & Button Show?" and the response is generally a sad groan and "No, but I'd give anything to go!" I always felt that way, but with my children and our family business taking up all my time, it was only a pipe dream. Until 2011, that is, when I mustered the courage to submit some designs for the show -- quite a nerve-wracking process. It was truly beyond my realm of comprehension that anything of mine might be chosen, but when they asked me to teach three designs, you could have knocked me down with a feather! So, last June I had the absolute privilege of, not only attending the B&B Show, but also teaching there. Truly it was a privilege, as I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people from all walks of life and all areas of jewellery crafting; a real joy. In this video I try to give you a little flavour of what the Bead & Button Show is all about. It's a huge scale show with literally hundreds of workshops going on throughout the entire 13 days. My favourite part of the show is The Gathering Place, situated on the mezzanine floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. A wonderful place to meet, bead and mingle, where inspirations, jokes and memories are shared; it's a place to meet old friends and make new ones. The Meet the Teachers evening is very exciting as you have the opportunity to buy new kits and supplies from all the teachers at the show. I think everyone sleeps well that night because of all the excitement, and the fact that almost everyone at the show, teachers and beaders alike, will have been up early that morning and end up going to bed way past midnight! If you're not doing a workshop or teaching the next morning you may get the chance to lie in, as the preview exhibition opening happens at around 4pm. It's the perfect opportunity to shop in relative peace before the show opens to the public the next day. The show catalogue is really helpful as it maps out exactly where the suppliers are that you want to visit. The Bead & Button Show is not to be missed and caters for your every beady whim, from learning new jewellery-making techniques and gaining inspiration to totally satisfying retail therapy when seeking out wonderful treasures for your projects. I had a fabulous time there and I can't wait to get to the Bead & Button Show 2014. Here's a link to my Bead Blog telling you more about my time at the Bead & Button Show this year: http://beadschool.co.uk/?p=2194&preview=true

Comparison Rhinestone, Gem, Button, Bead, Sequin Picker (Pick Up Tool)
Below you'll find the description and product links for this video, and, as always, I recommend you price shop for the lowest price possible for the tool you choose: DIY--Using a skewer, a match, a Q-tip with the cotton removed, the end of a paint brush (basically anything that has a stick shape.) Two options below: Skewer w/ hot wax-- Cut the skewer in half with a craft knife and dip the end of one half in hot wax from a lit candle. Let it dry and then lightly touch your sequins, beads, etc. to pick them up.  I found this technique leaves wax behind on rounded surfaces when you have to push to get it to pick it up. Pearls were especially tricky with this tool. It might work better if I had let the wax dry longer. Skewer with Glue Dots (homemade) --Use Aleene's Tack it Over and Over on old Glue Dot backing paper and let it dry. Link to Aleene's Tack it Over and Over http://tinyurl.com/y3hphyxz You'll take a couple of the dots and wrap them around the end of the skewer and then lightly dab it on sequins, beads to pick them up. I found that this was a little tricky to remove the sequin/bead from when trying to adhere them to paper. Maybe once it has been used a few times it will let go easier... Wax Pencil Pick Up Tool link: http://tinyurl.com/y63zdng2 30 cents. You need to sharpen this when you get it, so I carved mine to get a wide tip. Maybe I should have used my regular pencil sharpener, but I found it didn't hold things as well as the other tools and it doesn't like picking up rounded things like a pearl or a mini bead easily. Dotting Wax Pen Rhinestone Holder link: http://tinyurl.com/yy6at8de It was 59 cents when I bought it, but shipping has raised the price to 68 cents. You need to press the end into the pink wax that come with it (after removing the plastic from one side of the wax) and then pick up beads etc with it. I really liked this tool, but wonder if the pink wax dries out... For the price, though, it's great, and it comes with a holder for sequins/beads. Dual End Rhinestone Picker link: http://tinyurl.com/y5g5au4b $1.79 The first one I got in the mail had an issue where the top of the rubber part came folded over, and broke off...I did get a replacement. It has a pokey tool on one end that works well to push pearls off their backing.  I found this to be one of my favorites. Rhinestone Pick up Tool $2.77 the price has gone up since I bought mine and it's now $3.41 link: http://tinyurl.com/yy2ztxhe It comes in a nice plastic case and one end you can press in wax to pick up small things or use it as a pokey tool. It didn't work as well as the other tools, as the rubber part seemed to be too hard and too big, and didn't pick up things easily. Pick up Tool from Ecstasy Crafts--https://www.ecstasycrafts.com/PUT001 $4.20 + shipping for two of them. I really liked these tools and these were probably my favorite for ease of use and the way they felt in my hand. The only thing I wonder about is that the rubber is kind of sticky, and if you leave it out, I wonder if dog hairs, glitter, etc. will attach to the rubber..I probably will store these in a plastic bag. Silhouette QuickStik link: http://tinyurl.com/yynyvcdw It was $6.49 when I bought it, but is now $7.49 full price at Joanns. It might be a little bit different since it's also now not made by WRMK. I liked this tool because the rubber is covered, plus it has the plastic end that converts from a flat plastic piece to a pokey tool. My favorites: Dotting Wax Pen 59 cents Dual End Rhinestone Picker $1.79 Pick up Tool from Ecstasy Crafts $4.20 for 2 plus shipping Quick Stik from Silhouette $7.49 All in all, it comes down to a matter of preference, and I hope I gave you enough options to find one that will work well for you. Paw-some afternoon tea party at The Bead Shop
Saturday 3rd June 2pm - 5pm Here at The Bead Shop, most of our early morning chats involve cats in some way or another, whether it’s a slight grumble about what time our cats thought it was acceptable to wake up that morning (usually the crack of dawn) or musing over the gross or cute things they’ve done, they all enrich our lives and we wouldn’t change them for the world. We are all in absolute agreement that Cats Protection is a worthy cause and we jumped at the chance to help raise awareness of their great work looking after and re-homing cats as well as hopefully help raise some funds to enable them to help many more cats. Please help us help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Cats Protection, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing this page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot! We’re holding a Paw-some tea party at The Bead Shop in our light and airy workshop room along with a bead social on Saturday 3rd June 2pm – 5pm. As well as a selection of homemade cakes and copious amounts of tea & coffee available, we have designed two exclusive Cat inspired beading patterns, available for you to take away, or start at the party, (with a suggested £2 donation for the patterns). As we are aware many of you will not be able to join us for our Paw-Some tea party, we have also made the pattern available to download for free using the following links. All we ask is that you donate what you can to the Cats Protection.
